SILWOOD SCHOOL OF COOKERY

Block two
It’s been lovely being back at Silwood for my 2nd block - and I can’t wait to share with you !

One of many functions

A quick recap as to how everything is going yeah? So I've moved on from the previous block onto a new one which happened to be Silwood. I've been placed with three other fellow 2nd years doing various task which I'll go into depth.

How it works: Weekly were assigned to assist around the school. (Dem student, cooking student, baking student and lunch student.)
Dem Student - To prep for demonstrations for the first years along side Chef Carrianne and or Chef Tas. Everything has to be prefect and nerves have to be on a minimal as you're demonstrating in front of people.

Cooking student- helps in the cooking kitchen along side Chef Josh. Here you help first years with their practical's and further prep like making things in advance.
Baking student- Works along side with Chef Toni. Here you help with baking practical's and general tasks like making sure everything runs smoothly. Being the cooking or baking student requires a lot of patience as everyone is still in the midst of grafting how everything goes.
Lunch student - Makes staff lunch for 13:00. Lunches are tasty accompanied with a variety of sides.

Lunch with Kara

I've had a chance of being everywhere and I have to say being dem student has been my favourite. Even though preparation for the dem may be lengthy and precise nothing can take away the feeling you get from "teaching" others. I love speaking to the 1st year about possible garnishes and theory as a whole as I also got to recap everything I learnt and be some sort of mentor.

Just to share some of my highlights of this block include:

LeCruset recipe testing- Here I was given recipes to test along side their cookware. I tested a total of 10 recipes and my favorite part would of been seeing the recipes come together and taking pictures. I’m huge fan of  making food look attractive and glad I got to experience that.

Grilled salmon with coriander yoghurt

Cranberry glazed salmon

Seville marmalade marinated duck

Dems- All of them have my heart ,I love what I do. From making the most delectable pastries to searing the perfect steaks- I am content.

First dem -Steak dem

As I am finishing this block ,I've learnt a lot about working with people. The team you have is everything in a kitchen because all you have is each other. I couldn’t be more grateful for having Kara,Milto,Monique and Hannah by my side. I also felt a great amount of responsibility and that  has  pushed me to be a better person and uphold the level throughout this year ahead.
It’s been difficult but no words can comprehend how my days at Silwood have added to my journey of becoming the best chef I could possibly be.
